Anthropic has released Claude 4 Opus, its most capable model to date, featuring a 500,000-token context window, native multi-agent orchestration, and a new "extended thinking" mode that allows the model to reason step-by-step before producing a final answer. The release puts fresh competitive pressure on OpenAI's GPT series and Google's Gemini Ultra.
Key Capabilities
The 500K context window is currently the largest available in any commercial model, enabling users to feed in entire codebases, legal documents, or research corpora without chunking. In internal benchmarks, Opus 4 achieved a score of 92.4% on SWE-Bench Verified, making it the top-performing model on software engineering tasks.
Extended thinking mode is designed for problems requiring deliberate multi-step reasoning — mathematics, scientific analysis, and complex strategy problems. Users can toggle the mode via the API, with token usage for the thinking chain billed separately.
Multi-Agent Features
Perhaps the most significant enterprise feature is native multi-agent support. Developers can now define Claude as an orchestrator that spawns and coordinates sub-agents for parallel tasks — web research, code execution, data analysis — and synthesises results into a unified output. Early enterprise testers report 3–5x speed improvements on complex research workflows.
Pricing starts at $15 per million input tokens and $75 per million output tokens, positioning Opus 4 at the premium end of the market. A distilled version, Claude 4 Sonnet, is available at significantly lower cost for latency-sensitive applications.
